DSR Celebrates 20 Years with What About LUV?

Down Stage Right Productions is pleased to announce its Main Stage Twentieth Anniversary Production: What About LUV? based on the play LUV by Murray Shishgal, Book by Jeffrey Sweet, Music by Howard Marren, and Lyrics by Susan Birkenhead. Fetching melodies, razor-sharp lyrics and zinging one-liners all add up to a hilarious tongue-in-cheek musical comedy about love and how it makes us crazy. What About LUV? runs November 4-13, 8 pm, at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island.

Harry, despondent and depressed, is about to end it all by jumping off a bridge; but his old school buddy Milt (who also happens to be at the bridge that night – to kill his wife, Ellen) coaxes him off the ledge. When neurotic Harry and brainy Ellen fall in love, allowing Milt to run off with the girl from the office, it looks like everything will turn out rosy. But one year later, Ellen no longer loves Harry, Milt wants his wife back, and together they plot Harry’s demise on the same bridge where they’d saved his life. Two men, one woman, a Bridge, a very damp fur coat, neuroses, intrigue, passion, jealousy and a used paper bag all add up to one hilarious musical.

What About LUV? reunites the Production team that brought you last year’s smash hit Evil Dead: The Musical. Lighting Design by Darren Hales, Set Design by John Bessette, Sound Design by Andrew Tugwell, Hair/Make-up Design by Richard Elsom, Stage Management by Sarah Pearson, Choreography by Ken Overbey, Musical Direction by Sylvia Zaradic, and Directed by Mark Carter.

The cast of three is a power-house of talent: Meghan Gardiner (Evil Dead: The Musical, Dissolve), Neil Minor (Rocky Horror Show, The Drowsy Chaperon) and Scott Walters (Evil Dead: The Musical, We Will Rock You).

“Originally I didn’t set out to start a theatre company,” says Mark Carter, Artistic Director. “In 1990, I came across a script that I loved (Juvie) and wanted to direct very badly. There were a couple of Actors I knew that I wanted to work with, and thus Down Stage Right was born. Fast forward 20 years, I came across another script that I loved and knew the Actors I wanted to work with. Unfortunately, (or perhaps fortunately) we were not given the rights in time and the project was in danger of being cancelled. Meghan had suggested What About LUV? as a possible replacement. Once we had all read the script and realized that it was an ideal replacement we were off and running again. Serendipity rules my company. I am very excited that this will be the Vancouver Premiere of What About LUV?”

What About LUV? previews Wednesday, November 3 at 8 pm, and opens Thursday, November 4. It then runs through until November 13 (Sundays and Mondays dark). Tickets are $23/30, except for the preview, which is $18. Tickets are available at http://www.stubmatic.com/DSRP/ or at the door. All performances take place at the Waterfront Theatre, 1412 Cartwright St, on Granville Island.
